The PMS debate at HITEC was never about rooms

HITEC San Antonio hosted a rare closed-door debate between PMS CEOs and hotel CIOs, and the public version of that conversation just landed. The title, Beyond the rooms view, says it all. The old PMS argument was always about room inventory and rates. The new one is about labor cost, total cost of ownership and what 'cloud-native' actually means.

One structural gap the debate exposed: PMS decision making is still biased toward labor cost. That bias pushes hotels to build workarounds instead of replacing systems when the configuration is wrong. Another myth, the seamless cloud integration story. In reality, most deployments land with integrations that need care, not magic.

My reading is optimistic. A sector where vendors and buyers argue about these things in public is a sector that is maturing. The shift from features to structural outcomes is exactly the kind of progress hotel technology needed, and the conversation that started behind closed doors at HITEC is already improving how hotels buy PMS.
