Only 6% of hotels show up in AI answers
If you think your hotel's biggest distribution problem is the OTA commission, think again. According to an analysis published by Hospitality Net, only 6% of hotels appear consistently in AI-generated recommendations, and 82% of the content those AI tools cite comes from OTAs and editorial media. The pitch is the same as always, but the league just changed.
Think about what that means for a mid-size independent. You can have a great website, a solid review score, a decent loyalty list. None of that matters if the AI assistant a traveler asks about "where to stay in Lisbon" never learned your name. The brands and the big platforms are the ones tutoring the models right now, whether they mean to or not.
My read, and this is opinion, is that this is a huge opening rather than a threat. Direct booking strategy just got a new room to play in: being cited, structured and easy for AI to read. Hotels that make their content machine-legible today will be the ones showing up tomorrow. That is a project a revenue or distribution manager can start this quarter, not next year.
