Google has started selling placement inside its AI-generated answers. The first hotel chain to join is IHG, in an invitation-only program called Direct Offers. According to Hospitality Net, sponsored promotions will appear within travel recommendations generated by Google's AI.
For hoteliers, this is a paradigm shift in distribution. Until now, Google sold you space in search results. Now it sells visibility inside the AI-generated content itself. What does that mean? If a user asks 'best hotel in Cancun', the AI answer may include a sponsored IHG link without the user seeing it as traditional advertising.
Keep in mind, this is not for everyone: it's invitation-only, at least for now. But my take is clear: Google is opening a new paid channel within the AI search experience, and hoteliers who want to be there will have to rethink their marketing budget. Hospitality Net notes that IHG is the first partner, suggesting more will follow. The opportunity for chains is real, but so is the challenge of measuring ROI in a new format.
