Fast destinations, fitness that sells, and robots making reservations
Destinations that plan ahead bounce back from a crisis 1.5 times faster. That's the conclusion of a 20-year analysis of 85 major crises by TOURISE and Tourism Economics: where recovery used to take 24 months, it now takes 10-12 months. The difference is striking. It's not luck or circumstance, it's preparation. Destinations with established protocols, dedicated teams, and pre-set communication channels avoid panic and rebuild confidence far faster. For a hotelier, that translates to a simple truth: if your destination has a plan B, your hotel has a plan B.
In parallel, the same analysis highlights that fitness is no longer a bonus but a genuine booking driver across all segments. This isn't about a spare room with a stationary bike. Travelers, corporate, leisure, families, actively seek hotels where they can work out. That puts pressure on your amenity strategy: no fitness means lost bookings. Poor execution (cramped space, restricted hours, weak web merchandising) and it won't convert. Time to either polish what you have or plan its entry properly.
Then there's the weird part: the first robot guests are already booking. It sounds like science fiction, but companies with robot fleets, from package delivery to hospital assistance, are beginning to need lodging for their machines when they travel or deploy. A service robot working a three-day event needs somewhere to "sleep." PMS systems and distribution channels aren't quite ready yet. Some boutique and niche operators are already spotting it. It's not mass volume, but the precedent is set: the next occupancy frontier comes from where you'd least expect it.
